Our work together will start with:
-
an assessment that includes a virtual, parent-only intake session
-
rating scales from parents and teachers
-
a classroom observation (where applicable)
I will work to understand your child's history and your current concerns in order to establish an appropriate diagnosis.
If a child presents with needs beyond Selective Mutism, we will discuss integrating a variety of treatment approaches and/or involve other types of service providers.
I believe that Selective Mutism treatment is most successful when it takes place where the child struggles to speak. Therefore, it is rare for me to see clients in my office. When I work with your child, I will see them at their school, in the community, or even on a playdate.
These types of sessions will be relatively short-term as I work to transfer the child's ability to speak in different situations - first from you to me, than from me to teachers and friends, and so on. Simultaneously, I will be helping the key adults in the child's life learn the strategies to help maintain and strengthen the child's speech across all settings.

If you live too far for me to come to you, don't worry! I have had great success working directly with parents and teachers to help children overcome SM.
If your child meets the criteria for Selective Mutism and you choose to continue on to treatment with me, here's how we'll begin:
-
approximately 2-3 virtual parent sessions, during which you will learn the strategies and techniques that will help your child overcome SM
-
a school observation (where applicable)
-
a follow-up parent session to review the school observation and answer your questions that have come up while practicing SM treatment skills
-
a home visit for me to meet your child for the first time

Since a child is usually most comfortable at home, I find I can establish speech more efficiently in the home setting. Of course, if this doesn't work for you, just let me know!
